in Credit cards
Hi there,
Have had a look for this on the site but to no avail.
I believe that if I make purchases with my Visa Card I am protected if the company goes bust etc.
I am about to pay a deposit for my wedding photographer - the deposit is £100.
The website accepts PayPal - am I protected if I pay by Visa to PayPal to her?
And furthermore, am I protected if I pay by Mastercard?
On a similar note, does Visa Debit give me the same protection as regular Visa?

You have protection with a credit card for goods purchased over £100, but not for debit cards, as per The Consumer Credit Act, Section 75.
However this would suggest you are covered by VISA debit :-

Just to be slightly pernickety.. does anybody know if it is £100 and over... or over £100, as in £100.01+0

If you are using a debit card and therefore using the VISA chargeback option then it doesn't need to be £100.
If you are using a credit card and relying on section 75 protection then your total purchase needs to be £100.00 or more but your deposit could be less than that, as long as the whole cost is more than £100.00. Section 75 covers credit cards issued by VISA or Mastercard.
BUT there is likely to be an issue if you pay by paypal as this is classed as paying through a third party and is usually not covered by Section 75.

You would not be covered if you use the credit card via Paypal. The transaction needs to be made directly with the company and not through a third party.
Section 75 applies to any credit card, either Visa or Mastercard.0 -

It is extremely hard to be covered when paying by paypal, but it is possible.
In the event that the photographer went bust, you would need to complete a Paypal dispute and IF Paypal decide in your favour and state that you are due a refund, but they are unable to make a refund due to the lack of funds in the seller's account.
THEN you can make a Section 75 claim against Paypal for their refusal to refund the Paypal 'e-money' that they have stated you are due.(photographer is irrelevant at this stage).
But definitely pay via credit card directly as the above is more likely to fail than succeed.0
