Commuting from Salisbury to London

My husband has just set up his own business and needs to be in Covent Garden, London a couple of times a week. Catching an early train is SO expensive - the price halves after 8.45! Does anyone have any suggestions about how he can get there cheaper but still able to put in a full day at the office? Could he drive the bulk of the way there, park the car and get over or underground train??

Any help very gratefully received!

Thanks

Janie

  • Have you looked at any coach routes? depending on how early he has to be there and how many times you may be a bit stuck.

    Have you tried split ticketing?

Here I managed to get it down from £60 to £45.

    1. It may be worth investigating getting a Network Railcard.
    2. Try splitting at Basingstoke.
    3. Look at getting return tickets from Waterloo to Salisbury rather than the other way round. There may be more trains available on "cheap" tickets doing it this way.
    4. If you live outside of Salisbury, look at picking up the train at Tisbury or Warminster - it's further, but often cheaper (don't ask !!)

A network railcard is only good off peak

Splitting at Basingstoke works I am pretty sure - I looked it up some weeks back though I can't remember their precise journey

Peak trains to London are very expensive as you have found out, although it could be worse the FGW prices are far more than the SWT.
Defo need to investigate split ticketing and as said Basingstoke is a good choice.
Not sure if driving so far would work when taking in to account traffic and parking charges at station (if any spaces left BTM car park is often full very early)
