Energy switch confusion

Hi all,

At the recommendation of this site I used http://www.energyhelpline.com to see if I could do better than my current Scottish Power combined gas/electricity package. Of the ones it said would save me most British Gas' "Green Click Energy" was well placed, so I thought I'd go for the planet saving option (obviously not using any energy would probably be more effective, but you know...)

So I signed up and just got the stuff through from BG today. I noticed that the amounts they were proposing to deduct from my account per month (via Direct Debit) were almost one and half times what I was paying with Scottish Power. So I phoned up British Gas and they told me that because I'd signed up via energyhelpline.com I was actually not going to get their best rate at all?! I was told that I needed to go to house.co.uk (the BG site).

I cancelled the processing of the new contract, so I'm still on Scottish Power, but am hesitant about signing up directly with BG now, because I don't really understand what's going on.

Anyone able to help? Thanks in advance,

Toby

You need to do the comparisons using actual previous annual kWh consumption figures and forget about the DD amounts. If you use the ukpower site for your comparison, click on the actual £xxx figure and a window will come up shoeing the actual unit prices charged. You can then easily calculate for yourself what your DD figure needs to be, to cover your annual consumption.

    Hi,

And thanks for the quick response! Ok, I see what you mean. When I did the comparison I actually put in my annual expenditure on gas and electricity (by looking back at my old bills), you're saying I should actually tell it how much of those fuels I actually used right? That would appear to make more sense...:o
