Another possibility is the OP son is on the electoral roll (when he shouldn't be) ??

I'm sure that when I've applied in shops, the ID I've provided is just to prove who I am, not that I'm over 18. They've then used that as a key into a database to credit check me.

Having spent 7 years opening store cards the ID check was to confirm age as much as to confirm who the person was.

Troll alert.....there is something not quite right in her story

What exactly is a troll ?
  • This would not surprise me - sorry I can't help but when I was with my friend (at 17) in a major mens store and they tried to sell him a storecard at checkout!
But he politely declined, so no idea what would have happened if he had said yes.

When you are told you have to ask every single customer to open a storecard and you aren't sure how old someone is or far too busy to notice it is an easy 'mistake' to make.

I once got an absolute b*ll*cking for not asking someone for a storecard once when they were clearly far too young to open one.

    Linky to explanation.

A typical incarnation is a username posting for the first time, often with a somewhat horrific story, aiming to get a range of responses for their own entertainment.

A common trait is to let the thread run its course without reposting on it.

That's not to say an established poster can't show troll like tendancies, and some trolls do indeed repost on threads that they are involved in.

I will let you draw your own conclusions on this particular suspicion.

He should be on the electoral roll - with the date he is 18 indicated.

Yep (thought I'd keep it simple but you caught me out). What I should have said is that perhaps he was on the roll without his date of birth entered in the "age 16/17" column (or whatever it is) thus wrongly giving the impression he was already 18.
