Do you pay duty and VAT on books?
As I have ordered some from America, hope I don't have to pay any charges!

Customs duty is only payable if the item is worth over £135, so it won't be that. The £15.11 will be VAT on an item therefore worth £15.11/.175 = £86.34

My son had to pay a similar amount for a dvd he ordered from Play.com.

Most printed items are zero rated, but it is fairly complicatedApparently you don't pay duty /tax on books and on my sewing forum they seemed to think sewing patterns came in the same catagory as books.

I'm not sure if you will need to pay a customs clearance fee to the carrier if it is over 18 pounds in value but no VAT payment has to be made.0 -
You could try a letter appealing this. The customs officer has taken the view that they are in the category of instruction manuals, which are vatable.
This nightmare set of rules goes back to pre vat days. When the "civilised" countries set about educating, and preaching, to the rest of the world. Educational material, with books and maps were given duty exemption and lower postal rates. It remains to this day.0 -
I take it you have not had a copy of the charges from HMRC - If you can I would obtain these because my partner's were severely incorrect, after ordering goods from America to the value of £60 with delivery thru UPS, he received the goods, two months later received a letter saying he owed £60 in taxes, after a lengthy phonecall he got the majority of the charges reduced to £29 because they had calculated vat wrong and were charging him from a date 3 days before he even bought the product. Another two months later he received an invoice for £29, and they never collected payment, and that was about two years ago now...MFW 2020 #111 Offset Balance £69,394.80/ £69,595.11

I've had no copy of the charges just a card put through my door by the postman, so I don't even know if it's for the patterns or the fabric. I'm guessing it's the patterns as I ordered these 5 days before the fabric. I'm off tomorrow so I'll go to the sorting office and speak to them.0 -
have you sent anything that may not have reached the buyer & it's being returned?OwtForNowt wrote: »Hi there.
I thought this was the best place to post this.
I received a letter from Parcel Force today saying they have a package for me, from America, and delivery of the parcel is subject to payment of charges raised by HM Revenue & Customs.
The charge is £15.11 (Plus of cause £8 Parcel Force Clearance fee)
Now, I am not expecting o receive anything from America, so I have no Idea what this is. Is the £15.11 17.5% of the Item(s) in the box value or are there set prices?
Thanks.0
