HP printer "lock out" print function - cannot queue documents for printing

This is not a new problem but I have not always had it and it has started bugging me recently.
I have an HP Photosmart printer. I run Win XP Pro. I have plenty of capacity on my PC.
When I print a document to the printer, the system displays a box in the middle of the screen telling me it is about to start printing. From then on the print command is locked until the document has finished printing. If I close the box, then I get an hour glass on the screen which locks me out. I cannot queue up several documents to print, I can only print one at a time.
It didn't always used to do this, and I think it must be some change or supposed upgrade HP has introduced to their software - or I have inadvertantly changed the print settings in some way. But I can't for the life of me find where.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what is the fix?

Have a look here...
Right click on printer, select properties, click on the advanced tab.
Normally it will look like this:
Try the above or a mixture of settings above and see if it helps, (make sure you make a note of the original settings just in case).Pants0
