Wheel bearing failure after new tyres?

Hiya

A few weeks ago my car went in for an MOT and required a new NSR tyre fitting. Ever since, the car has sounded very noisy but I assumed it was something to do with nice new tyres. I'm only a woman after all!!!

But my boyfriend said it sounded like the wheel bearings were out as when I steered left the noise went. I have just taken it back to the garage this morning and been charged £61 for new NSR wheel bearings. Thing is though, is this not something that has been caused by the fitting of the new tyre? Should I say something? Have I been conned? I like the mechanic, he has done a lot of work on my car and came recommended by family but I do wonder whether he sees me coming!

Any advice warmly appreciated.

Thanks
Abi

Can a new tyre destroy a wheel bearing?

Not in that short space of time...... But it could greatly accelerate the death of an already worn bearing if not correctly balanced/fitted.

The NS wheels take the most punishment due to taking proportionally more right hand turns...... (traffic islands)
They're also more likely to be the victim of pot holes.

I think you have to put it down to coincidence. He's fixed if for a reasonable fee (sure some one will say its only 20mins work and a £7 part etc...) but if he was after conning you he would tell you it needed shocks, brake pads and shoes etc etc...

    Thanks guys

I am guessing it is just coincidence then, after all, my car is 8 years old now and is requiring increasing amounts of work done on it year after year :(

Still less than you'd lose in depreciation on a newer car ;)

Throw money down the drain, or pay money to get something useful back.

  • Funny they never spotted the wheel bearing was on the way out at the MOT, I guess they skipped that bit.

A wheel bearing can fail over time or it can go suddenly.

there is no given rule with failures as i'm sure you're aware. the bearing could have started to go but wasn't detectable at the M.O.T, but then the OP could have driven home that day, hit a pot hole and triggered the wheel bearing to fail.

A bearing will make a whirring noise and the noise pitch will change as the speed increases

Bottom line is, a bearing is a cheap part and is simple to replace unless it needs to be "pressed in" usind specialist equiptment

  • Unless you got a Primera, then its a new hub ..... bearings not replaceable .........

guess what car i got ,....... grrrrrrrrr

Bad tyres (faulty) can make a similar noise to a bad wheel bearing, but if replacing the bearing fixed it the tyre is fine.

surely the worn bearing would have been noticed at the time of the mot, its possible that the new tyre wasnt balanced and this could have weakened an already weak bearing to the extent that it failed on you (maybe the garage realised their mistake and balanced the tyre when they done the bearing) have a look at the weights on the wheel, do they look very new??
