It is the nimrod spy plane that I am particularly resentful for, and that was a Labour debacle. They spent three times the money for the endevor space mission on it, and we have had nowt back. We could have gone to Mars for the money we've already spent on a total waste of time.

The programe's been going on for so long that it has both red & blue fingerprints all over it

OK, so we need to save money and make large cutbacks in our Armed Forces. That's fine - if you can't afford it, you can't have it - everyone would agree. Lets see if our commitments abroad now drop in line, as we will no longer be an effective force to farm out to clear up other nations problems. I have a feeling things will continue, with the Govt convenced we are a super power, even though this stopped years ago.....

We aren't at war. Not a conventional one anyway. And if we were then we would be 99% reliant on permission from the Americans to project military power overseas, which would only be given if they were themselves involved in the conflict, meaning our participation would be pointless anyway.

We could double our navy to 4 aircraft carriers and 50 ships and they'd just about serve as half a days cannon fodder if China and Taiwan kicked off.

The kind of conflict we are involved in is assymetric warfare occupying countries where the civilian populous is largely hostile. Therefore it makes more sense to spend the money on infantry, intelligence and flak jackets.

Having a navy is mostly a reputational statement these days, one that we cant afford due to being broke.

Which makes the UK a pathetic poodle.

  • Its the spin thats most entertaining. We had a need for an aircraft carrier on Tuesday, we have the need for one in 2020, but from last Wednesday to 2020 we don't need one.
