Housing benefit: Submitting a claim before i move in

Hi
To cut a long story me and my partner broke up some 4 months ago.
We have a little one.
I moved out and back with my parents etc.
It is a private property to which she now receives housing benefit.
We have decided to give it another go, however i am due to move back from my parents at the start of november.
Trying to sort out my finances etc... could we lodge a a new claim ( change of circumstances) to the council now, to avoid having a delay in payment when i move in? ( ive heard it can take up to two weeks)
Or do i physically have to be in the property to start a claim?

You need a signed tenancy agreement to get it started.

You can make a claim up to 13 weeks in advance of moving in so I would suggest that you complete the C of C form and inform them of the circumstances now to prevent a delay if possible. At my LA, we don't actually pau claims until we know the person is in the property but if you tell them in advance, they can get your partners single person discount removed and any info from you in preparation.I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
