Mum has just told me she calls it "cooking from scratch" - cos when we were wee she used to open the "pretty empty" fridge and scratch her head wondering what to cook for dinner:rotfl: :rotfl:
Mind you she also has the theory that I learned to cook in "self-defence" cos she was so bad at it:rotfl:

Because you are cooking from scratch - scratch being another term for start.
So instead of opening a can of beans that are already made for you, you'd open a pack of dried beans, soak em, then make the sauce using fresh ingredients etc -
Hmm that's not really answering the question is it - would depend where the term scratch came from - anyway it is meant to mean start/beginning.
