Tent electrics - then you can leave the fan heater on all night and take a kettle, light, mini fridge etc. Even take the TV. It's a couple of quid extra on the average campsite, but if that means you're warm and comfortable then it's a small price to pay. I wouldn't leave home without it!!

Thanks for this. I think I'll try it without at first to see how I go. I kind of want to go bare back at first :D
  • Definitley a self inflating mat. I'm also not keen on sleeping bags especially the mummy style ones - too claustrophobic, but I have treated myself to a good quality large sleeping bag and it's fantastic, so warm and comfortable.
I don't like to take a huge load of stuff in the car so only take what I need. I have the usual cooking equipment and a decent stove with a large gas bottle - haven't run out of gas in 4 years. I dont bother with a lantern because I normally go camping in the summer when it's still light until really late, I always take a torch and spare batteries though.
I dont take a cool box. When I just go for the weekend I just take frozen sausages and bacon and they defrost ready for use.
Some people like to take loads of equipment with them, it just depends what you are comfortable with. I would never dream of getting an electric hook up. Personally, if I wanted all the benefits of electric etc I would rather just stay at home, and this is from someone who loves her straighteners - just not when I'm camping, it's not worth it.
Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for this. What sleeping bag have you got. I'm just looking at 3 season bags at the moment, quite expensive.

And what self inflating mat do you use? I've looked at Fat Airic (now the dozer) and this looks thick and good. However, do I need one that's this thick. At the moment I've no idea how comfy these things are. I wouldn't want to shell out $$$ on a model that's inadequate only to find that I need a model up.

I'll also have a look on the thread posted by Fifi and the flowertots mad Mum!!

    FiFi

My little un loves Fifi, if this is indeed what we're talking about here....

The thread you posted was very useful.

Do you know anything about the caravan and camping club. The site I'm looking at says it's for C&CC members only. Is this correct. I don't mind paying the £37 annual membership, as this is the only site within a decent walk of my favourite Norfolk pub http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=9067&map=on#maphere
  • I do quite a bit of camping / touring.
I've been down the road of inflatable beds and they are good so long as you spend a reasonable amount on them.
But I've had 3 and all have obtained punctured and not in places that are repairable.
I've switched now to a fabric bed with metal legs which was quite cheap and amazingly comfy. Only problem is it's a single, but ok if on own.

I've done the sheets and pillows which travelling during summer as my bag would have been too warm, but in colder weather you cannot beat a bag.

Mod cons wise I have a gas/12V fridge and a camping stove.
BBQ along for the ride too.
Fridge comes in exceedingly handy and now I wouldn't be without it.
Lighting wise a lightweight head torch will always be by your side.

Hi there, yeah I've been looking at the fabric beds, they look quite good. I've just been down to JTFs and they've got some in, plus lots of other camping stuff. I didn't buy. Just eyeing this up at the moment as I don't want to go mad at first. Seen a gas stove for £8, but then you've got to add VAT. A small gas heater for £19. Not too bad.

FiFi is just nickname, nothing to do with the flowertot, mad as in sometimes looopy!
I am a caravaner, we were a member of the C&CC as they were the only company who would insure our German van, but I don't think we ever stayed on one of there sites, it all adds up when you are charged for your pitch, electricity and then per person as well, sometimes it is cheaper to stay at Haven although not all there touring sites have the same quality of facilities as Caravan & Camping clubs. If you join they will send you out there 'Big book of sites' which lists there own C&CC sites and also thousands of independent sites who have asked to be included in the book, we stayed at one of these sites in the New Forest and they totally ignored the 3 metre distance rule and put a tent very close to us. If they are like the snobby Caravan Club, who we are a member of for caravan and car breakdown cover, they will have some sites where anybody can stay but there will be an additional charge if you are not a member and they will have other sites which are exclusively for members only.

    HTH FiFi :)
