Credit Union Loan Need Help
Due to screw ups with the rates people (Council tax for mainlanders) and my own stupidity, this morning i recieved a notice of enforcement of judgement for £1378.55. We moved into our house April 2007, my husband paid the rates in full for the year and asked that the rate account be changed to his name as he was now the owner, (it had previously been his sister on the rates) the next year however we never got a bill as they had never changed it to his name. As we had paid it in full the year before we weren't noticing the fact that we weren't paying it iyswim. So another year rolled round and then a letter came in for his sister and i discovered the problem. I entered into negotiations, got the account changed into my name and was paying it monthly but then fell pregnant and lost my job before baby was born, after baby was born i developed post natal depression that mutated horribly, still having treatment, and was claiming cb ESA so things were tight. now i am a full time student and my husband earns 15k pa so funds were and still are tight so i let them slip and now judgment has came through for full amount owed with ten days to pay. it will really mess up my life plan if i have a judgment against me. atm we have two debts(excluding mortgage 113k), one for my car and the other my husbands credit union loan. in a few years i want to become a barrister and will need as much credit i can get.
as im panicking about getting the money to pay the rates my husband and i were talking about going back to the credit union. he pays 115pm of which £88 is loan repayment. currently the loan is £2752 and savings are £1835.97. Do you think we would be able to get a loan for the rates bill? my husband has been with the CU for years and years and all his loans have been repaid. Can you get CU loans to pay off other debts? Previous loan was for our house. Im desperate atm, are there any other alternatives? We can't really afford another loan, and though that if we went to the credit union we would be able to continue making the same amount of payments but for over a longer period. we couldn't afford to add another loan repayment into our monthly budget and being honest we probably wouldn't get another loan.
Thank you for reading this and any help much appreciated. please no flaming.

No offence metalgal, but I think you need to be more realistic in your plans. You have a history of mental health problems and you have bad/ ill managed debts - no chambers is going to offer you a pupillage. Sorry to be blunt, but don't waste your money on something that is not going to happen. There is a lot more that you can do with a law degree, so I would start looking at other options.
I would also edit your language - this is a family forum.Gone ... or have I?0 -
If you have savings of £1,835.97 with them, can't you just use that?0

DMG - edited the language was just emotional at the time of writing. also barrister training is different in NI you simply have to get someone to take you on for training, its not a chambers system and already have a future master but that is neither here not there.
rhcp - We can't touch the savings as the loan we have is secured against it.0 -
Hi metalgal
Surely if you didn't pay your rates / council tax for that year, the money should still be around somewhere?
Our CT is about £140 a month so in my budget I would sure notice that not going out / coming in?
Hope you get it sorted :-)

i really didn't notice
we had previously rented and when we moved in paid them at once and then hadn't thought of them as they weren't coming out of the account.

Just a thought....why don't you go to the Credit Union and just simply ask if you can have a top up loan or something. Surely if your OH has been with them for years there shouldn't be a problem...I've always found them to be very understanding. Hope you get it sorted.0
