Hi all:)

Please can someone give a bit of advice with regards to my husbands accident at work which led to an inguinal hernia injury? (his job role involves a lot of heavy manual lifting) He required emergency surgery and was signed off work for 11 weeks.

He had just recently received an application pack from the DWP which he had filled in all the relevant forms requesting an accident declaration from them. He has now since received a reply back from a decision maker saying that he /she agrees that his accident was an industrial accident. He has also been given a date to attend a medical examination in the beginning of November.

Can anyone say what normally happens after the medical examination? and would he be classed has having a form of disability due to having a hernia repair? his own GP has said that he would now need to be extra careful with regards to the heavy weights that are involved as he would be susceptible to recurrent injury given the nature of his job role.

Many thanks for any replies in advance bf xx

Inquinal hernias which are routine are now done in day care surgery and then out you go..couple weeks rest and sorted...from what you state he had emergency surgery due to it probably becoming strangulated on the day ...however once this operation has been carried out with sutures and mesh to strengthen the area the person concerned will be able to function fully unhindered. In no way shape or form does it leave you with a disability,in fact the op site is now stronger than ever.Having had the same thing happen to me i can tell you that the area is sore for a while and at times numb, this quickly abates and normal service is resumed.
