Active v Passive

Always a good basis for discussion, H&L have produced an article mainly to promote one of its 'to be marketed' active funds but it does have some charts. They explain that tracker funds that no longer exist will be excluded from the index (I can't see how this would distort the results particularly) but the don't say that active funds that no longer exist, which I guess would be mainly Dogs (which is more likely to distort the results) are also excluded, which I assume is the case, although I am not absolutely sure, any ideas on this?
http://www.h-l.co.uk/news/feature-articles/active-versus-passive-funds*Our tracker fund index is calculated by taking a simple average of all UK tracker funds which exist in the IMA UK All Companies sector. These figures may contain a "survivorship bias" since any tracker fund that existed during the period, but is now closed, would not be included in the performance figures since the data is no longer available.

any ideas on this?
Lies, damn lies, and people trying to sell you something
It is an interesting article, and raises some points that need to be made when making these comparisons, but as always it isn't the whole story.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

Most articles pushing one or the other as best rarely is objective. Its never as simple as they make out (doesnt matter which side is being "promoted").I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). One thing that would be interesting would be a chart showing the average performance of their Wealth 150. Not just the current contents, it should include anything that has been in there in the past up to the point they dropped it.0
