No sick pay for six months!?

A friend has just started a new job.

But he gets no sick pay for six months!

Is this the norm nowadays?

    I thought that was standard. It certainly is in all of the local authorities I have worked in over the years.

    I presume you mean no Company sick pay whic is pretty normal I would say.

    However, he would be able to claim SSP from his company
    make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
    and we will never, ever return.

    If you are referring to the company sick pay scheme rather than statutory sick pay then, yes, it is quite common.

    Yep meant company sick pay not SSP.

    Yes, because Sick Pay (over and above SSP) is a perk, not a right.

    Why would you think it isn't the norm? You wouldn't want to employ someone who goes of sick on their first week, takes lots of money out of the company and then leaves without contributing anything to the company?

    Why would you think it isn't the norm? You wouldn't want to employ someone who goes of sick on their first week, takes lots of money out of the company and then leaves without contributing anything to the company?

    I personally have never worked anyway where this is the norm. My current employer limits it to a max of 5 days off in the first 6 months. I can understand why you wouldn't want to make unlimited but none?

    As someone else has said, a company sick pay scheme pays over and above an employee's statutory entitlement, and as such is a perk. Many employers pay SSP only.
    I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

    Our place doesn't pay company sick pay while someone is in their probationary period (normally 6 months but can be extended to maximum of 12 months) and after that it's a maximum of 5 days (pro-rata) in a 12 month period.

    I had a probation period of 3 months, for a 6 month contact (4 months in now) and I had 10 sick days available, and possibly more after that as long as I have a valid sick note. Kinda surprised to find this is normal.
