Do I have a chargeback claim?

Hi,

I purchased a cooking experience voucher from The Kitchen in Parson's Green. It's meant to be a Michellin starred experience with the chef Thierry Laborde. I bought the voucher in April for my boyfriend's birthday and it had 6 months validity meaning it will expire on 26th October this year.

My boyfriend started trying to book the experience back in August but the website for The Kitchen (visitthekitchen.com) just said it was temporarily unavailable. It is still saying this nearly 2 months later. We have tried to call the phone number but there is no answer and emails go unacknowledged. At a loss we drove to the address we had for The Kitchen. The shop frontage was still there and there was no notice saying they have gone into liquidation but it was quite clearly deserted with post building up behind the door.

We have come to the conclusion they have gone bust and we feel thoroughly ripped off. The experience voucher cost me £89 and I purchased it on my Halifax Mastercard. As the value is under £100 I don't have a claim under section 75 and I didn't buy it on a Visa Debit card I was told I don't have a claim under Chargeback.

However, I was wondering if Mastercard operate a Chargeback scheme for items under £100 and whether I could have a claim under this.

One further note - the payment was actually taken by a company called Concordia Ventures Ltd and not The Kitchen. They aren't responding to me either but I think they are still trading as far as I can tell.

I am on completely uncharted territory here so really appreciate any expertise you can offer! It's really upsetting that something bought in goodwill as a gift has now turned so sour.

Thanks,
J

  • Ask Halifax card services - the worst thing that can happen is they say no.

£100 is not relevant as that relates to Section 75, however there is a 120 day limit from when you made the purchase, so you are out of time.

  • Withabix, I thought it was 120 days from when you noticed an issue which was obviously in August when the website went down and we couldn't use the voucher.

Yes I am going to call Halifax card service but have heard so many stories of people being fobbed off by customer services consultants who aren't aware of Chargeback that I wanted to be forearmed with the right information before calling.

    Thanks,
    J
