Can I seal up a chimney breast air vent?

Evening All,

I'm in the process of decorating a bedroom. The two upstairs rooms both have air vents on bricked up fireplaces and I was wondering if there would be any problems bricking up the vent when the room is skimmed.

The chimney breasts are in use as the downstairs rooms both have gasfires which vent through the chimney.

I believe the vents are there to aid air flow, however as the downstairs fireplaces are not bricked up, should this be a problem.

you should really cap off the chimney pots (for the bedrooms) if you are bricking up the vents.

I plan to keep the downstairs gas fires in use, won't these need to breath through the chimney stack ?

if you look at your chimney stack top, you should see the same number of pots as your fireplaces.
they have seperate flues. do not cap off the ones in use!

Yes you can and no you shouldn't. Irrespective of whether the pot is capped the chimney still needs to breath and thats why you have a vent.

Bad idea!

The vent must stay, unused chimneys should not be capped to allow for through ventilation, and have one of these installed .
