almost homeless

Hello

Im new to this forum but looked about and couldnt think where to look for help. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

My situation has got worst over the last month, i have been kicked out of my house as family problems have turned into a nightmare and im currently living on my friends floor. I cant stay here for too long as his mum is wanting me out soon and i havent got anywhere else to go.

I phoned my local council to see what they can offer and i have got a assessment on friday to go to, to see if i can get any benefits for housing. The woman on the phone said to me its unlikely as im a fulltime student.

I dont know what to do, should i leave education so i have a roof over my head or is there anything else i can do? I havent got a job as its very hard to find one that works around my study hours and i have just over £18 in my pocket with a maxed out credit card and a overdraft of only £100 which is at -£97.15. I dont want to leave education but if i stay in it then i might be on the streets within a couple of weeks.

Im 22 with no children and no disability.

Any advice/help will be very helpful.

thank you

Are you at university? If so they can sometimes offer financial help/general help to students. Have you had your loans etc through. Interest free overdraft from the bank (you say it's only £100 but could it be more?)? Does your uni have it's own job finding service, many do?

If not at Uni...can you alter your course to part time to allow chance for a job? Plus being part time may allow you to qualify for something that you wouldn't get full time.

Anything to sell? Not a long term solution that last one but could help your current £18 problem.

Full time students without dependents or disabilities do not get housing benefit, AFAIK.

What is your course? Are you able to get a student loan? Does your college/uni have a hardship fund? Can it offer you accommodation? Can you do your course part-time?

Many courses classed as full time require attendance of around 15-25 hours leaving plenty of time for students to work across evenings and weekends. I know that part-time jobs can be really competitive but many places are ramping up for Xmas - shops, warehouses, Royal Mail sorting, etc.

A weekend job would bag you £95 per week and if you could manage an evening or two on top, that would head towards £140. I know it depends on the area but I popped to the local job centre with a pal whose full-time at college and we found a dozen plus jobs for her to apply for - warehouse, M&S, care homes, box office assistant, call centre, etc.

In the meantime, see the Shelter website to understand your options to deal with your homelessness and see how the council will process your application. Post details of your debts on the Debt Free wanabee forum on MSE to find out how best to handle them.

i thought i was going to be in the same position as yourself, but i managed to work things out. first of all i would try to get back in touch with your parents or whoever it was whom you lived with originlly, see if a comprimize can be reached. if you can ie through uni or the library look at the shelter website, theres loads of useful info there, then try direct gov that should give you more deetail on any money ie crisis loans and housing that you may be entitled to maybe even pop into your local citizens advice to talk face to face with someone
    all the best
  • I am sorry you are going through this. I think you should try to speak to your parents before you get into the homeless spiral, you don't want that. take care

I went through a very similar situation when I was 17 and in college.
I was made homeless by my dear dad. I moved into a housing association called The Foyer. It's almost like a hostel, but a LOT nicer. Own room, etc.
There are many across the country, if there is one near you they will be able to help you a great deal.
    Hope your situation improves!

Contact Shelter as soon as you can.

A healthy young man of 22 is very unlikely to receive any help from the council, unless in terms of a bond for any future deposit.

It would very much help people to advise the OP if he could state what sort of education he is involved with.

Have you been to see your college/uni counsellor? THey have a specific hardship fund to help students who have problems such as yours and whilst it would not be a long term solution it may give you enough of a breathing space to be able to work something out.

You wont get housing benefit as you are a full time student, and even if you did it would only be a room rate as you are under 25.

How much longer do you have to go on your course? If it is only the rest of this year, you have the option to leave and defer until next year or ride it out and get it finished. Only you can make that decision but talk to your college first.

In the event you do leave, then you need to make an application for JSA and a homeless persons application to the council. They will assess your need and if you are homeless will house you in a hostel or a B&B whilst they assess your homelessness claim. Even if you are homeless you can claim JSA although you may have to sign on at the job centre every day.

HTH, please take advice though before you make any rash decisions.
