I ALWAYS make soup with mine. It makes lovely soup, with lentils, carrot, turnip , leek , & parsley. I put a few potatoes in the pot while cooking to absorb the salt, then throw them away. I add the veg while the gammon is cooking, it gives the gammon a lovely sweet flavour, absolutely delicious!
I got a 2 kg pack of back bacon recently from Makro, it was so salty it all ended up in the bin. Totally inedible, yuck!1st Purse £114.19 Monthly GB:rotfl::j:wave::j:rotfl:

Just got four small gammon joints from Lidl on offer down from £4.59 to £3.29, went for the unsmoked as they tend to be far less salty. That's one to cook up now for sandwiches and nibbles and three for the freezerEverything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0

Great price, need to get a few. Do any of you notice an after taste when you use joints of bacon that have been frozen? I've had it with the joints and back bacon, just wondering, maybe I'm getting old noo and my taste buds are all wonky.1st Purse £114.19 Monthly GB:rotfl::j:wave::j:rotfl:

No can't say I have ever noticed any 'after taste', I freeze them all the time. Some times I buy on with the intention of using it in the next day or so and then decide to freeze it. Most times when on offer I buy at least two one for now (usually for sandwiches and nibbles) and another for the freezer.
I got four today but may well check back another day to see if they have any more (my store had three large boxes of both unsmoked and smoked on the shelf).
Just waiting now for them to get the goose in for Christmas, we had one from there last year and it was lovely.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -

Strange you should say this.
My wife often looks for 2 for 1 bargains, so 2 packs of bacon usually means one for immediate use and one in the freezer.
When the freezer one is opened later, I often complain that there is an after taste. It just doesn’t taste the same as the first pack.
My ever loving, God bless her, pooh poohs this and says there is nothing wrong with it. (But then, she doesn’t eat bacon!!!!)

I made the sam mistake with a ham hock recently, soaked a load of peas and shoved it all in the slow ooker. Ended up ditching the peas, soaking a load more, and cooking the ham with it again....was gorgeous second time around.
I'm also a fan of the Nigella recipe, using cola.Busy mother of two, juggling with my new job as Infant Feeding Support and keeping up with good household management!
I became debt free after losing my Mum :A ...I'd rather be poor again.0 -

I've been moaning about this for YEARS lol. I get it with pork as well, but no other meat, none of my family can taste it and I was beginning to think I was losing it. I've stopped freezing it unless its cooked first. Its only when its frozen raw. To me it has a similar taste as rancid butter but not as strong.1st Purse £114.19 Monthly GB:rotfl::j:wave::j:rotfl:

Re cooking bacon/gammon joints, I almost always cook them in the microwave. It's something my mum showed me when she first had one. I use one of those steamer sets (basket in tall dish, then a lid) but I'm sure you could do it just in a covered bowl.
First I boil the kettle and pour the boiling water all over the bacon, then throw the water.
Then put just a little water (1/2-1") into the dish, put the gammon into the basket, add the lid. Cook on the highest setting for 1 minute per lb, then on medium (I use 60%) for 13 minutes per lb. Test with a skewer, like a cake.0 -
Been cooking them for years. Soak overnight and then bring to boil. Throw that away and rinse and reboil.
But if you have cooked gammon before then you will know this,so it looks like you have got an iffy joint there. I would take it back and complain.0 -
Nigella also does a ham in cherry coke - cooked in the same way and that its totally gorgeous. you can use the leftover stock to cook red cabbage in. Yum Yum.0
