If you couldn't eat it because of the salt then you should expect Tesco to refund the price. They will want the packaging back - I have done this before with a joint that has been full of gristle and inedible. There is no reason for you to lose out on the £6.ELITE 5:2

Just finished off a Gammon Joint bought in Lidl last week, (Unsmoked).
To be on the safe side my better half still insists on soaking and boiling, as described by others on these posts.
The ham was superb, and the stock was used with a mixture of vegetables to make a delicious soup which I have just polished off with a glass (or two) of Chianti. (Hic!)

Just got the Lidl newsletter and have been looking at the site, they have Gammon Joints on offer down from £4.59 to £3.29 so I might have a wander up there tomorrow with my trusty shopping trolley (or granny trolley as I call it, but then again it is a forty minute round trip walk and I don't drive - that's my excuse and I am sticking to it).
I notice they also have Pepsi 2 Litre for 79p and more importantly Savoy Cabbage for 29p eachEverything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
I often have gammon joints cos i love them
I usually buy from Somerfield (soon to be Co-op) or Sainsburys. Never had a bad one yet. I always boil them and after the first 10-15 mins you get a white froth on the water, i just scoop this off and continue cooking. I dont usually bother changing the water.
As tbw says, you should complain and get your money back, it was unedibleErrrr...come back later0 -

hi
Thats very disappointing for you ! Not sure what you can do with it once its been cooked.
I know that to reduce the saltiness before cooking you can soak joint in cold water overnight then put into a pan, cover with cold water again and bring to boil pouring off that water before you continue to cook. Cooking in the oven seems to increase the saltiness so maybe boiling the joint in a pan on the hob would help some of salt come out ( or use a pressure cooker as i do sometimes).
You can reduce saltiness of dishes by adding potatoes - seems to absorb some of the salt especially good in soups - maybe you could find a recipe that has ham and potato together.
Complain to Mr T - if it was too salty to eat then you should get money back !
Agggggrh !
I didn't soak it beforehand or boil/ simmer for a while. Just didn't think about it as I was in such a rush. I just bunged it in the slow cooker with some root veg , apple juice and, coated it with wholegrain mustard and honey. Despite the apple juice and honey it was still way too salty.
I do usually prefer smoked bacon and gammon but on this occasion it was unsmoked.
I did go back to Mr T and thankfully got my money back despite not having the packaging and only the receipt.
The section manager said that they hadn't had any other complaints but then that wasn't all that unusual as customers just dont complain and or take the offending food back for inspection and to allow them to investigate.Something to bear in mind I suppose.July £10 a day challenge £ 20.05 / £ 1550 -
Many thanks for all your replies.
I know I got my money back this evening but I am so not wanting to chuck it out. Such a waste.
On that note I might risk making some soup with a tiny tiny bit of the gammon.
We'll be eating soup for the rest of the month at that rate.
Ta again.

Be careful Karen as it still may be too salty in the soup, try it in something like tomato or potato soup which might take up some of the salt taste.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
