Save the Date cards

Who do you send save the date cards to?

Do you send them to everyone you are hoping to invite to the wedding, both for the day and the evening? If so how do you differentiate between the two. I.e. do you send two different versions?

It may be a silly question, but i am really confused about this - not that it takes much!!! :)

  • I just sent out to day guests but evening guests knew about it as well just through word of mouth rather than formally. We are getting married in december so wanted to make sure people made themselves available around xmas parties and such but didn't want evening guests to think they would be invited all day so just did that informally and said they would receive an evening invite nearer the time

Im not sure when save the day cards came into use but we didnt have them when we got married.
I guess people send them if they are getting married at a popular time of year eg christmas or holidays or particularly nowadays when weddings dont normally happen on a saturday and guests will need to perhaps arrange work holiday to attend.
I suppose you send them to those who you really want at the wedding, although there is an element of telling close family and friends when your wedding is so I suppose its a more formal version of word of mouth..
Ive never received a save the date card or notification but I guess thats because over the past few years its only close family who have married and those friends who have tied the knot potentially could have done without me at the wedding if I had not attended!...

In my experience we sent out invites to 60 day guests and 56 were yes so we only dropped 4...we sent our invites out 12 weeks before the wedding and it gave people plenty of time to organise themselves if they wanted to attend.

We are getting married August bank holiday and are going to send save the date cards just to those guests invited to the day. I have ordered them from vista print so got a good deal.

We're getting married in June and sent out save the dates last week, but we're having a foreign wedding and can't really invite evening only! x

    Thanks Guys,

I am asking because we were looking at August (holiday season). So wanted to be sure to let people know in plenty of time to keep the day free. :)

We get married in June and i sent our save the date magnets out back in Feb. I sent them to family who live abroad and those who may need to travel and stay overnight in hotels. I also sent them to a few other friends so they could put them on their fridges!

Only sent to the day guests. :)

If I was having an unusual wedding - say 10 people in the day and 100 more at night I might go with 2 separate save the dates. If it was a standard do - with a lot during the day I would only send Save the Dates to the day time guests.
    I love surprises!
  • i am not having any extra guests to the evening- so when we booked the venue on the 1st july this year, i sent them that day to everyone

  • My mum sent our save the dates. As I have a large (very large) family, only my aunts & uncles are invited to the day, with cousins and their children to the evening. What she did was she sent the standard 'save the date' magnets to everyone, but she found little ivory cards & envelopes from Ryman to put them in. On the outside of the card, she stuck a sticker on the outside that said "evening invitation". She got those from hobbycraft.

The only reason we've done this is on my mum's side of that family, they've not really had wedding breakfasts before - every wedding so far has been a self catered buffet. So if one person receives an invite it's sort of assumed that everyone is invited. This is the only polite way we could think of to say "you're invited, but not to the day part!"
