Do HMRC automatically backdate tax credits?

Hi, can anyone tell me if a new claim for Tax Credits submitted in the middle of the tax year will, if successful, automatically make a backdated payment? - i.e. a lump sum to cover from April to date of the claim and then commencement of future payments.
Also, should you expect to receive a full year when you make the claim mid-year?
Any help, greatly appreciated.

A claim for Tax credits can be backdated for up to 93 days, as long as you can show you qualified for that period

It isn't automatically backdated either, usually you have to request backdating.0
