old gas boilers-do they cost money?

my Orion boiler is now 15 years old. I had it repaired twice last year as the pilot keeps going out and the same thing is happening again. I think its a thermocoupler (technical term. are you impressed?) My question is this . I cant afford to replace it yet but maybe in the new year. I looked briefly some time ago at new boilers and they are quite expensive (ones i was looking at were about £1000!) so def cant afford one yet. If we managed to get around to buying a new one would I notice any difference in my gas bills? I am presuming that the newer type ones are much more efficient that the old one I have as it seems to be working at full blast and after I read up on boilers the amount of radiators it has are at the max.

Newer boilers are more efficent as they have to be over a certain percentage (The figure eludes me at this time of day - 75% - 80% Rings a bell).

PLus the new boiler will have to be a condensing type as well - Which are very efficent.

In terms of gas bills - I would imagine you should see a drop but I would doubt it would be anything to really cheer about - Hopefully someone on here has gone from an old boiler to a new condensing and see what they say

Are you eligable (sp) for the warmfront grant as well? could help towards your costs?

They would be more economical to run but it would take a long time to recover the cost.

The big downside is that they are a lot more complicated to repair and there are a lot more parts to go wrong.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

thanks for the replies. not sure about the grant but probably not as no-one is on benefits etc. I will check it out though as you never know...

Well it looks like if i HAVE to replace it at least it will be more efficient!

i had a new combi bolier added about 2 months ago we replaced a back boiler.
not sure how old it was as it was already at the house when we moved in. at a guess 20 years plus!!
we where using 3 units a week with the back boiler and we had the water and heating turned off, so it was only the little flame on!!
with the new combi we have the water on and only use 1 and a half units a week. so it definatly pays in the long run to replace old boilers!!:j
