Experienced dog groomer

my ten month old old english sheepdog is between coats, swims daily and is a bit matted, i am thinking of having him groomed but as he has not been before i would like someone with knowledge of the breed.
i live in monmouthshire, south wales but will travel to surrounding areas for a good groomer.

10 months without being groomed?

Could be quite painful for him if you leave him too long, do you brush him daily yourself?

I have an OES and despite trying my best to keep on top of grooming, find that mats just appear! Then multiply...

I get Ollie trimmed four times a year which helps and if yours is quite matted you might find it easier just to get a close cut rather than try to comb the mats out.

I think mine prefers having short hair - and he is so handsome when he's just had a haircut.

(no point in giving you details of my groomer, we're in Scotland!)
  • oh no!! i do groom him daily, but his legs are a nightmare, as i towel dry the mats appear, obviously. i can deal with most body mats its just there are so many now.
  • I worked as a Dog Groomer for 13 Years, By the sound of things your dog is going to need clipping! Swims daily = very bad news for his coat! Do you groom his legs after you have towel dried him? I always used to say to customers who liked to bath their dogs themselves regulary, if you washed your hair, rubbed it with a towel and left it what would it look like? Same principle always use conditioner too when bathing..... swimming however???? To be perfectly honest if he is going to be a swimmer I would consider having him all clipped of every 8 - 12 weeks, but it's your call.

I can recommend Cowboy Magic, its marvellous stuff for getting mats and knots out.

Got mine off ebay for a tenner :jit was originally used for horses I think but has migrated to being used in the dog world, but also heard a rumour or two about it being wonderful as a leave in conditioner for us humans :) not tried it myself though

    I bet he's a handsome boy!

It may be worth you posting on Dog Pages forum in Dog Chatter or one of the welsh dog rescue forums, Hope Rescue is in South Wales so someone on their forum is bound to know someone - maybe post in Dog Chat.
