While reading over the forums I have noticed a bit of negativity towards AVG. I am wondering what the reason(s) are behind this?
I'm a Linux user so don't tend to worry about anti virus software. However, I still have the joyful task of looking at friend's and family's machines that do run Windows and are often plagued with all kinds of malware and viruses. I normally clean them up and leave AVG installed. I have no real reason to use it other than it's free and has never caused me any problems; at least none that I know of.
Any information is much appreciated. Thanks.

Many years ago, I had avg installed on a secondary laptop - Windows ME lol; all my machines now have Avast which I've used since 2005 -- the best free anti-virus protection out there . imo. But yes, horses/courses

The Lastest AVG has become a system hogg, as well as bloated compared to its predecessors and also its detection rate is not as good as Avast and Avira as well.
I got rid of it because it conflicted with Zonealarm to randomly render my browsers unable to access the internet, and locked them in the processes so that it needed a 20 min shutdown. Forceing end processor didn't work.
Moved to Comodo and Avast and all systems go.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740 -
AVG Free used to be fine. It's not effective any more, there are much better free alternatives, Avira, Avast and MSE being just three of them.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at Avira and Avast. I will also be looking at Malwarebytes tonight. I think it's sensible to run some scans on my parents desktop now I know AVG does not have the greatest detection track record.0

I have the paid-for version of MBAM but even the free version is great for malware scans and removal :cool:Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at Avira and Avast. MalwareBytes Free is a manual anti-malware program that should be installed and run on a 'need to' basis, in addition to a standard AV program that runs in automatically in the background. No free lunch, and no free laptop
