Clinique foundation-wrong colour-help

Hi
I bought a Clinique foundation today from Boots. The lady at the counter applied the shade 01 Alabaster all over my face and when I queried her about how light it was she said she didn't want to go any darker but would bronze me up afterwards. She put bronzer all over my face. I went outside and went shopping to see how it sat on the skin and really liked it, but was still unsure about the colour. I went back into Boots and again asked about going darker and she said she wouldn't advise it. I trusted her opinion (stupidly) and bought it.
I've just tried it on again on a clean face and it is not right. Far too pale. I know I can 'bronze it up' but I don't think I should have to apply bronzer everyday, expecially in the winter. I know I'm reasonably pale but I never go for the lightest shade in foundations, usually an 'ivory' or 'fair' never alabaster-I look like a ghost!
Basically my question is this, can I take the used foundation back to Boots and try a different shade? I don't want a refund because I really like the product, I just want the right shade for me.
Has anyone had any experience with a similar matter?
Thanks

How funny, we have the same name and initials and i used to wear alabaster from clinique! Perhaps she was going on the basis that it is winter and you will lighten up a bit? Who knows.
I use bobbi brown now.0 -
clinique should be quite helpful in returning - especially as they were the ones not choosing the right colour for you. are there any other clinique counters nearby - as i have noticed that the individuals 'advice' differ. once you have a second opinion you can then make your own decision. if all else fails - there should be a phone number on clinique website and they are helpful. they should exchange or offer a refund if you are not happy with anything. when you go back to the same clinique counter if there is another assistant then you could ask her opinion.0

omg - i was talked into buy alabaster in the even better foundation, now i'm pale, but never need the palest shade from clinique, got it home and applied it all over and it made me so white i looked ill, have just sold it on ebay but have lost £s. I've now moved over the bare minerals after using on/off for a few years and are very happy, it feels much nicer on my skin and i'm sure its stopping some of the spots.
I have never tried to take a foundation back, but have heard lots of people have by saying they had a reaction.0 -
I have not ever tried taking back any foundations to Boots or Clinique but I don't feel I'd have a problem if I had to. Both Boots and Clinique offer good customer service and are helpful. I am sure Clinique wouldnt want you to walk around being a negative advertisment for them either!
I'd go back, worst thing that could happen (and I don't even think will happen) is they refuse you. But I really think you'll be fine with this, especially as all you want is to trade the colour over.0 -
I have stopped using Clinique foundation. I had the alabaster for mature skin - I looked at a photo of myself recently and it looked like I had a clay mask on! pmsl. Im going for No. 7 lift and luminate now.0

Hi
just take it back thats what i did when i was sold wrong colour, explained what had happened and that shop lighting always makes foundations appear to match when in natural light they don't. Clinique refunded me back as they could match me a foundation.0
