Mac Powerbook Aluminium G4 15.2” 1.5 GHz (A1095) - screen replacement

I have a five year old one of the above with three or four thin vertical lines on screen. I’ve tested it by connecting an external monitor and the display on this is okay, so have concluded that it is probably the screen itself (or one of its cables) rather than a graphics/motherboard problem. I don’t really want to spend £800 or £900 on a new Mac, and I suppose I could just put up with the issue, but was thinking of attempting to replace the LCD screen or the entire screen display lid section.

1. Other than bidding for “spares/repairs” on eBay, can anyone recommend a cheap and reliable (UK?) source for such a screen? And how much roughly? Best I’ve seen for an allegedly new (and 6-month guaranteed) part is around £100 for screen and inverter from a Marseilles business supplier on eBay.

2. Can anyone recommend someone to carry out such a repair? London/Oxford/Cambridge/Newcastle-based ideally so I can deliver/collect in person and save shipping costs. And again, roughly how much for the labour, depending on whether I or they supplied the replacement part? Best all-in part-included service I’ve come across was around £275 mark, which is more than I’m willing to pay given the cost of the part on its own I’ve potentially sourced and the age of the machine.

3. Alternatively, how easy would it be to fit myself and has anyone experience of doing this? There are service manuals and guides on-line and I’ve replaced PC hardware innards in the past, so am not a complete techie novice but it’s a laptop and it’s a Mac ;-)

I had a search round this forum and most specific detail on this issue seems PC-related, so any advice gratefully received J

  • Might be poor connection on mutliway connector. Have you tried the Apple stores Covent Garden / Regent Street ?
  • Thanks for the suggestion. How deeply seated is the multiway connector inside the laptop if I take it apart to have a look? Is it possible it is the LVDS cable on the display section side? (The problem doesn't vary if I jiggle the screen/machine, which meant I didn't really think about a loose connection. Nor does it seem temperature related, something else I'd wondered about, as it is the same at boot up and after several hours of use.)

Re the Apple stores, I'd assumed that they either wouldn't be bothered with a 5 year old machine or that they'd want to charge a fortune, so it wiould be cost ineffective. But I guess it costs nothing to ask :-)

    Thanks again.
