Car insurance for 19 year olds

All insurers keep telling me that car insurance is based on risk. This I accept.
However what I fail to understand is why insurers will happily insure my 19 year old son (with 2 years NCB) fully comprehensive to drive a Peugeor 306 1.6 petrol for 8000 miles per year, for about £1000,but when trying insure him to drive a 37 year old MGBGT third party for 1000 miles per year they want anyting from £3000 upwards.
Surely the more powerful Peugeot, fully comprehensive and 8000 miles per year is a greater risk than the MGBGT or is it that once again the insurers are profiteering from the youngsters ?
Anyone else had similar experiences or got any solutions ?

Because it is a very old car, and un-safe (i.e. no Euro NCAP rating). They are at high risk of paying out more if he gets in an accident and personally injures himself, as well as an aging car that would be expensive to replace, they would just write it off straight away for the value of the car at this moment in time.

Doesn't sound right to me, his company are very unlikely to have any significant liability for any injuries he suffers and the car is low value

OP........ if he wants to drive an old car he's better off with a classic policy, they will give agreed value (rather than just saying it's 37 years old therefore worth nothing) and you'll be surprised at how cheap it is. You might have to shop around to find someone who will accept his age and the fact that it's his only car. Downside is lots of them don't generate NCB

Try looking at quotes for classic cars, these will agree a value of the vehicle with you at the start of the policy the premiums are typically a couple of hundred pound (Often significantly less) for comprehensive cover as the Insurers recognise that car collectors cherish their cars which greatly reduces the risk of a claim.

They will often require the car to be garaged, have a limited annual mileage and be your second car.
  • Because the MGBGT is a sports car and much more likely to spin off the road than a modern Peugeot.
