Laptop screen not working

A few weeks ago my laptop screen started flickering. No pattern, just random flickering while I was using it.
I've just returned from a week's holiday and turned it on to find that it no longer works. The screen lights - I can see the backlight is working but it is blank. I'm using it right now via an external display so the laptop is working well other than the screen.
I've removed the surround from the screen but there are no obvious breaks or frayed wires.
It's an HP and I reckon it's a couple of years old.
Does anyone know what's involved in repairing it and is there a "how to" guide on the net somewhere? Most guides refer to a dead backlight or inverter. (Could it be my inverter?).
If it's a shop job then what's the likely cost? I know a good local shop and wouldn't touch PCworld so no concerns on that front.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, I have seen a how-to guide actually -- will try and search for the link. not for the novice and obviously warranty will be void thereafter, although that might be a moot point . Given the plummeting costs of laptops nowadays, personally I'd not bother with getting it fixed unless the fix was permanent and about £50. imo.0

Thanks - agree with the cost of repair compared to new unit.
I have no warranty and while no expert with hardware I could try some basic repairs myself due to warranty being expired.
I do know a local shop so i might get a quote on repair prior to arranging it

Yes, it's worth a try -- just perhaps impose a cost limit :cool:Thanks - agree with the cost of repair compared to new unit.

Usually the inverter or screen - but if the backlight is working then I think that means the inverter is working.
Fitting a new screen is easy to do yourself. What model HP is it? You might find a screen on eBay - make sure it is the correct one for your machine as there are many variations.0
