Coverting colour Jpeg to greyscale

Can anyone help and tell me how I can convert a colour JPEG to a grey scale version please?
I don't have adobe photoshop so am unable to do it on that.
I suspect that I am being obtuse and that there is a simple way of doing it (or at least I hope so!)

    open in windows photo gallery
    click 'fix'
    and then adjust colour and saturation?

    Or get IrfanView. It's free and has an option to convert to greyscale.
