Argassi/Zante-something similar?

My OH and I love the Greek Island of Zante, we've been a couple of times staying first in Tsilivi and then Argassi. We loved both places, Tsilivi had the best beach but Argassi had loads of great restaurants very near to where we were staying. We are planning a holiday next year (probably late July) and really like the idea of going back to Argassi but at the same time would like to try another island.

Over the years we've been to Corfu,Halkidiki and Rhodes but would like to find somewhere similar to Argassi. We are in our late 40's, enjoy the beach, OH loves fishing. We like a bit of sight seeing and we like to be near a good variety of restaurants to eat out every night. I need to be fairly near the beach and restaurants/night life as I am not able to walk too far.

Anyone else enjoyed Argassi and know of similar Greek Island other than those we've already been to please? Was thinking about Skiathos but don't know a lot about it?

  • Hi

We love the greek islands as well and have been to many over the years. We have been to Skiathos and can confirm that the beaches are lovely but the main town is very commercialised although that does mean they have a great variety of restaurants and tavernas. There is a regular bus service that runs from the town to all the beaches, although it is often very crowded.

We have twice been to Thassos which is a lovely island. You fly into Kavala on the mainland and transfer to the ferry for a 40 minute crossing. If you go with a tour company then they transfer your luggage from the airport direct to your accommodation so you are not heaving cases on and off buses and boats etc. Taking the ferry is a lovely way to arrive, just watching the island getting closer, seeing the hills with the olive trees becoming greener as you approach, amazing.

The first time we stayed in the main town which has plenty of bars, tavernas and shops together with some ancient greek ruins and ampitheatre. There is also a town beach which is ok. The second time we stayed in the small resort of Golden Beach. A lovely beach, clear water, safe bathing. No big hotels, just small apartments, several tavernas and a couple of small supermarkets and bars, nightlife is very low key. For sightseeing there are organised trips to the mainland to Phillipi and to the Alistrati caves, a long day out but well worth it. The island itself is easy to get round either by bus or car.

Have also been to Crete a few times, staying near Rethmynon, ( Plantenes and Adele), good beach and plenty of tavernas and bars, a bit similar to Tsilivi. Also easy access to Rethmynon for sightseeing and shopping.

I'm sure you will have a great holiday whatever island you choose.

    Cheers
    Cats.
