Expired Passport - Urgent Help Required

I have a relative in Spain that needs to return to the UK for family emergency. However their passport expired in the last couple of months. Can they use an expired passport or can they get an emergency return passport from an embassy etc.. Can this be organised easily? What's the timescale, costs? Many thanks

Just to let you know from personal experience.

I was visiting my father in Spain a few years ago and my passport was stolen. I was due to travel the next day. Went to the airport next day and explained to the airline. They sent me to the police based at the airport. I just filled out a police report, they gave me a copy. This then allowed me to travel back home. HTH
