Cheque incorrectly in maiden name

I have just been sent a cheque from a business in my maiden name. I have been married for 15 years but still use my maiden name as my hotmail email address which is where they must have taken it from as my correspondence with them has been by email. Does anyone know if I go to the bank with my marriage certificate and utility bill whether I will be allowed to pay it in? The top part of the cheque has my address printed on it. I have been with the same bank single and married if that helps.
I don't really want to send it back it has taken me three months to get the money in the first place and don't want to delay even further by asking them to reissue.

  • How much is the cheque for - small amount on a good day you might get away with it - a large value cheque you may not.

    Hi
I too received a cheque in my maiden name about 4 months after I got married (it was from my Mum!). I've been with the same bank for years and they were happy to put it through, so it might be worth a try...
  • Cheque is for £200 not sure if you consider that a lot or not. It is a lot for me! I think I will give it a try sounds like ti might depend on the person on the day. Just wondered if anyone who works in a bank might know of policy - would like to put it in Halifax

It's been a few years since I managed a Halifax branch, but if you'd taken the cheque in with your marriage certificate back then they'd have accepted it.

As there's little risk of somebody with an identical name to your maiden name coming along and claiming the funds were rightfully theirs, I doubt you'd have a problem.

If it became habitual, you might not have got a service quite so sympathetic.
