I want to sell my old laptop and need to clear everything off it but don't have the installation CD. Any ideas that won't cost too much.

If you want to safeguard your data, then just sell the laptop without the hard drive. Take it out before you sell it. Someone on eBay will happily buy it in this state.
Disconnect power, remove battery, remove HDD. Replace HDD cover, and sell. This won't cost you anything but time. Use the removed HDD as a secondary drive, either installing it in your desktop, if you have one, ir placing it in a caddy and using it for additional HDD space with your (assumed) new laptop.
Alternatively, buy a similar HDD to the one you're removing and insert that after removing the current one. Then sell it with HDD, but no operating system. This will cost you to buy the HDD, but you should get most of this back in a better selling price.0 -
reset to factory setting using the restore partition, then install ccleaner, and tick the wipe free space box!!

Alternatively download a live CD version of Ubuntu, or similar linux OS. Burn onto a CD and boot from it.
Once booted, format the whole HDD and install a local copy of the Linux OS onto the HD.

Wipe it first with DBAN to make sure it's clean (nice 7 pass DoD standard)

Then install a linux O/S

Make and model number?0 -
to wipe the HDD just use something like active@killdisk (but looking at DBAN that looks as good aswell)
to reinstall the OS you can use any standard install disc, (eg if it is vista just borrow a vista install disc and just activate it with the activation key underneath your laptop)0 -
Didn't get the price I wanted from ebay for my laptop - even second hand it's got to be worth around £450 so does anyone have any other suggestions where I could sell it?

What laptop is it?
Value on laptops and desktops decline a lot the moment you walk out the shop door.0 -

TIA
Why is it 'worth' £450 if it won't sell on eBay at that level...?0 -
Would you pay £450 for a second hand laptop on ebay? If the case was 18carat gold maybe.0
