contents insurance for multiple occupancy tenant

My son is a tenant in a multiple occupancy house in Manchester. He is no longer a student. I think he needs an insurance policy to cover his personal belongings, which amount to about £5k in total, but he can't afford more than about £20 per month. All the cover we have found lately via comparison websites etc seem ridiculously expensive; they are asking for almost as much as we pay for buildings and contents together for our large-ish house! Does anyone have any useful advice. I am almost inclined to set up a savings system, put away a certain amount of money each month, and then use that in case of any accidental damage to or theft of his stuff. Does anyone have any experience or advice for this?

The risk is much higher for a shared house - lots of people inviting other people over, leaving doors and windows open, cookers on, parties, things going "missing" etc etc.
Endsleigh would be able to offer a policy similar to their student contents policy so are not a bad place to start. Towergate also do let property covers so worth a try. You can also look for tenants contents policies like those distributed via letting agents from smaller dedicated intermediaries. These only offer limited levels of cover but sound like they should be sufficient for your son's needs. Try googling Letsense, Letsure, Let Insurance Services and get some quotes direct from them - ensure they either don't mind it is a shared house or are informed about it.
The other option is that all the occupiers of the house get together and buy a joint policy via price comparison webistes - the cover will be better but it may be a bit more expensive than a specific tenants policy.0
