Help, my laptop won't play media

Hi All, please speak slowly, I'm not the best with computers. My Dell laptop won't play any media this morning. There were some updates automatically installed last night and this morning I cannot play any videos on the internet or any music stored in my folders. It's a Dell Inspiron 1545. Everything else seems to be working OK at a normal speed.

Download VLC, it will play anything you throw at it:
