I've recently started using a near dormant Natwest Current account account and see you can use one of the following with their card reader:

Are Natwest customers issued with both? I've just registered for online banking (asking for a card reader) and have been sent a 'online banking card' for it - though I am sure I used to have a debit card of some sort for this account but haven't used it for a couple of years so will need to find it.. (or ask for a replacement)Debit card
If you use your debit card with your card reader and you need to order a new debit card please call telephone banking.
Online Banking card
To undertake certain functions on the online banking service you may have been provided with an online banking card to use. This can only be used in your card reader on the online banking service and cannot be used in shops or for making payments on the internet.
If you need to order a new online banking card please call our Enhanced Security Helpdesk

Those cards are issued by default when you have a non-card based account like e-savings.
However, you can also request them on card based accounts if you don't wish to or are not able to use use your debit card.I've recently started using a near dormant Natwest Current account account and see you can use one of the following with their card reader:

Personal customers should only have to use their debit card for online banking - the online banking card is usually just for business accounts which don't come with a debit card.0
