    A reasonable assumption? :-

......... most small businesses don't image / copy cheques to that degree before banking them - in that they know the serial number?

Not only could an image be retained as you mentioned, but many banks will send a copy of the voucher to the customer from the voucher processing unit, and will only send the original cheque back once sent for representation or following cancellation of the cheque. (something that iblametheparents was trying to ascertain)

Not only that, but some banks allow cheque pay in at ATMs and will copy an image of the cheque nowadays. The point I'm trying to make is rb10 made an assumption which may or may not be correct, and is of no use to the discussion.

Returned unpaid doesn't necessarily mean that the cheque has been returned back to the payee!

... but it doesn't mean that it hasn't, either!

'Returned unpaid from our bank' .......... is a good step in that direction!
