Landline in Spain to Landline in UK

I think it was about Nov.'04 that someone asked if there was a cheap dialing code from Spain to UK using a landline. The response was Dial abroadSpain plus another which I've forgotten. I printed off the dial abroadspain homepage and gave it to ma-in-law.

She returned to Benidorm Wednesday, and tonight she endevoured to phone us via that site. After three unsuccessfull attempts, she resorted to the to the "old" way.

I've emailed the site asking for advice, but if anyone has themselves used a cheap access provider from Spain to UK or indeed knows of one that works, or indeed can suggest what if anything she may be doing wrong, I/we'd be gratefull for the help. Incidently, I don't suppose the fact that OUR main provider at this end is talktalk might be anything to do with it would it ?. We use 1899 to call her.Thanks.

It appears calls to the UK by dialling 902-902-952 before the normal international number (i.e. 00 44 etc) will cost 8.33c connection and then 6.73c per minute 0800-2000 and 4.03c per minute 2000-0800.

So, it's a good deal more expensive than the 3p connection and 1p/minute you're paying on 1899 to call her but it should work:

902-902-952-00-44-20-7230-1212 (the last ten digits get you to Scotland Yard but it's a good example).

There was another thread on the subject recently too - HERE.

You'll need to check exactly what problem your mother-in-law is having; is the call failing on connection to the DialAbroad Spain service or is it failing when she dials the full international number? I've used the service for the past 9 months (pretty much since launch) and I haven't had a problem...

    Cheers,

    John.

    My in-laws use Direct Telecom:

    http://www.direct-telecom.es/

They can setup CPS so the person in Spain just picks up the phone and dials the normal number - 5 cents/min to the UK

    Previously, they used Teleconnect Speedline:

    Thanks

    Islandman,

Another thought - some lines in Spain still use pulse dialling - ask your mother-in-law if she can hear beeps when dialling a number.

If not, she will need to see if there is a DATOS button on the phone (used to switch from pulse to tone dialling).

If there is, dial the access number to the cheaper phone provider then press the DATOS button on the phone, then dial the UK number.

My in-laws had a Telefonica-branded phone with a DATOS button on it.

If there is no button on the phone, then Direct Telecom Carrier Pre-Selection is the only way really.

My in-laws went with Direct Telecom anyhow as the rate during the day is lower and it makes programming speed dials a whole lot simpler.

    Thanks

Thanks for the link to direct-telecom.es, have checked out site and will almost certainly set this up for our Spanish land line. I wonder if reduction will work on the dial up internet connection we use when we're out there. Could be a double saving on the cards!

  • If you buy a Eurodirect phonecard for 6 Euros it gives you 300 minutes to call the UK. Thats 2 cents a minute. However its only at this rate if you call from your own private landline (Telefonica).
If you call from a pay phone its best to use the local call access number. Whlist you have to pay for the local call you then get hundreds (600?) of minutes for your 6 Euros. If you decide to use the freephone number from a payphone you pay a hefty (12 cents a min?) surcharge.

The rates changed 14/2/05 - charges are now €0.023 per minute - so a €6 card buys 4 hours 20 minutes and a €12 card buys 8 hours 40 minutes.

The drawback is they expire 45 days after first being used.
