Flippin Tesco ... again!

My Partner and I hate shopping at the best of times, but we were desperate so decided to go at midnight the other night.
Well our Tescos is the 2nd largest one in the country... we had a lovely time in the shop without millions of people until it came to check out.

Not 1 till was open and we had to go through the self check out.... ahhhhhhh I thought the other half was going to have a fit as the stupid machine kept doing its own thing... it wasn't until a nice assistant came and did it for us.... (we aren't thick but couldn't be doing with the flipping till!)

Why in a 24hr store aren't proper tills open...at least one????

Grrrrrr

I detest these self scan checkouts. I once had a full trolley full, got the checkouts to find the same situation. I asked when the tills would open and said said 9am, this was about 8.30am so I said you know what, I can't be bothered with this and left my trolley there and walked off. She offered to scan and pack and I said no, that is appreciated, but you should not need to do that and at that time on a weekend it was crazy there were no real checkouts open.

It's the way you need to put every single item on the conveyor and wait for it to decide it's correct. Takes a long time, and if you are by yourself like I was, it would mean a pile of stuff at the other end or ages bagging it as you go and looking up sku codes and stuff.

If it wasnt for technology Id be out of a job, but these are the worst inventions ever.

Are they really that bad? Staff in my local Tesco are so brain dead it's quicker for me to do it myself. The machine is more polite than most of the staff too. For example it actually says "please" and "thank you".

    The main reason is numbers.

To expand further : at my store 95% of all transactions between 11pm and 7am MUST go thru self scan tills.

The only exceptions are when the self scan tills crash, which to be fair is not a regular occurence.

Some people just love to moan.
  • The point is... if you want to do a big shop late at night to avoid the busy times or if you work at odd hours why should you get less of a service. I would have thought 1 till being open wouldn't kill them.
Those scan things do my head in... its asks you to put it on the conveyer belt then tells you it is not registering. Its ok if you only have 1 or 2 items to put through but if you are doing your main shop it is a nightmare.
BTW I would normally do my shopping on line but I needed stuff urgently.

They obviously do it to save on staff. I avoid these machines if I can because they take real people's jobs. Nothing like a good chat with a friendly assistant.

That's precisely why I DO use the machines in the Tesco near my work (Goodge Street). The cashiers are so slow, rude and surly, and don't tell you how much the total is, instead pointing at the screen and just holding their hand out for the money. I always say, sorry, I can't read, I'm afraid you're going to have to tell me how much is costs.... GRRRR

Do we have the same Tesco?

The onset of 24 hour shopping was never a big change for Tesco. Staff were always there over night, night workers would turn up in jeans and vests, they would blare out commercial radio music from a stereo next to the store tanoid. They were break at 2am for pie and chips and go back to work at 3am. When Tesco went 24 hours, they gave all the night staff uniforms, got 1 person to be on a till, and had a security guard and that was it.

  • i agree with dumping your trolley and i would have done the same - im there to shop, not do the cashiers job as well - maybe they can get late night shoppers to stack a few shelves as well
