ITV HD on Freeview

I have just got a Freeview HD TV.

ITV-1 has the HD sign in the top left hand corner. But when a live football match is on the sign moves to the top right hand corner.

Can anyone explain why this is and what it signifies as regards the HD signal?

  • I would imagine it is shown on the right during football matches so as not to obscure the score/team names/clock.

.............................and more often than not it disappears completely!
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • It will change to the other side after 45 minutes I would imagine........

  • I note that the HD logo would be too far to the left to be obscured by the score box.

Also it does disappear when the programme is unpscaled HD not full HD.

I am wondering if it is something to do with the type of HD quality signal being broadcast.

Wikkipedia has a lot of information on HD but no explanation on the ITVHD Logo.

I do note according to Wikipedia BBC1 HD starts broadcasting in November 2010.
  • Does there have to be a reason?!

They might move it purely for aesthetics? Or perhaps and it could be a crazy idea, that it's because the camera at the footie is not just being aired by ITV HD which means signal is shared and each company which shows the feed has the relevant logo applied to it, so to make it easier it's applied in the same position?

    Just a wild thought :D

I believe it is meant to stop you from damaging you television set. A lot of modern TV's are very sensitive in comparsion to CRT's and if a logo/image appears on the television set for too long it can burn into the screen. It's much the same as having a screen saver on you computer screen to stop it burning icons onto you monitor.

They do it with football matches because you are likely to be watching the same thing for over 90 minutes.

Yeah that's usually for Plasma TV's (google Image retention).

However most logo's will bounce around the same spot occasionally to prevent this from happening.

It's not as much of a problem for LCD/LED TV's but of course if you have a static image sitting there for 24hrs a day, well then your just asking for trouble ;)

Screen burn was a problem with CRT and plasma screens, LCD does not suffer from this.

But LCDs do suffer from image persistence which, although not completely permanent like screen burn, would be somewhat infuriating if it was caused by a broadcaster with no respect for your equipment! I say ban the branding!
