Hi All
Have downloaded and been using Open Office 3.2 on my new laptop. Almost every time i try to open a presaved document it freezes and I have to go through ctrl.alt.del to stop and have another try.
Any ideas on how I could stop this .....
OR - a cheap way to get microsoft office - trial pre-loaded on my computer - but very expensive to go on and buy - didnt factor this in when purchasing ....
thanks for any help .....

That's very odd, I've found 3.2 to be perfectly stable, you could try downloading version 3.1 and seeing how that works out?0

OOo uses far fewer system resources than MS Office, for example and so the reason for a stall is likely to be external to it. I suggest in the first instance you make sure that you have all updates installed - the latest version is now 3.2.1 - especially any Java updates.
If the problem persists I would un-install OOo reboot and then re-install it using all the up-to-date files.
Beyond this we may need to look at what available RAM/CPU you have but I would be surprised if this was the problem given that we run it on an 8-year old machine with 256Meg RAM and have no problems at all.
Are the files you are trying to open ones that you have created using OOo or are they files you have been sent from someone using MS Office? Despite the fact that .docx files, for example, are now read by OOo there are occasional problems with some more format-heavy types - especially in reading Excel created files being read in Calc.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

I've used Openoffice 3 in Linux & it's buggy.
You could try
http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/wordprocessors.shtml
they have lots of other word processors that are Openoffice compatible.

FYI, you can get MS Office at all good retailers; RRP £189.0

Ditto to the extent that I continue to use it in Linux without issue (Ubuntu Lucid - OOo 3.2.1 and SuSe 11.3 - OOo 3.2) and use in on my works lappie running Windows XP SP3.
Some problems - seemingly not widespread - and limited to relatively non-mainstream usage (e.g. saving .odt files as XHTML) have been reported with some Linux installs. The cure it seems is to install OOo Suite over the top of OOo.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).
