Redundant?

I am working for my local authority and I have been there 2 years on temporary contracts (6 month contract, 6 month contract, 1 year contract). As there are huge budget cuts ahead in our funding it is likely that my contract will not be renewed in March 11.
It is also likely that there will proper redundancies within the permanent staff in the department.
Am I right in thinking that I will not be seen as redundant as my contract is due to end in March. I am trying to get ahead of the game with planning for the lack of job but then I wonder if redundancy insurance is the way to go (there is a chance I might not go as I find myself doing a slightly different job than most of my colleagues of which there are only 3 of us there although I am the only temp contract).
Any tips or advice for me would be greatly received.

Redundancy protection insurance will not help you. You know that you are on a time limited contract and that it will run out soon. They would therefore not pay out. If you have two or more years continuous employment then you cannot simply be dismissed / made redundant without being treated in the same way as others - but the fact that your contract is fixed term and that it is coming to an end is a potentially fair reason for terminating a contract. You are entitled to any redundancy provision for the two years service. Not that it will be much0

Hi,
I'm going through a claim at the moment due to a redundancy, but I don't think redudancy insurance is going to help, I'm afraid.
I'm with Wessex Insurance, I'd put a link up or at least the website address, but the internet is playing up for me at the moment.
If you search for them, they are at Jewry House in Hampshire, so you know you've got the right place.
These are excellent, but, they will send forms etc. asking if you were aware of impending redundancy? and they will send a form to your, then ex-employer for them to sign, the form asks questions like, was this a tempory contract? are redundancys common in this position etc.
If the answer is Yes to these questions, they might not pay out.
If you want figures, I pay £12.00 per month for £413.00 cover - the odd amount is mortgage payment plus 25% of wages, or something like that, but I'm sure that gives you an idea.
Best of luck, whatever happens0 -
Thanks for that - I did wonder if it would apply to me. At least I have 6 months to save some pennies and get myself job hunting.

Oh just another thought - I have been paying into the pension for the past 2 years - what happens to these payments?0

If it's under 2 years you can have them back. If it's 2 years or over, they will be frozen (transferable to a new employer pension if you wish, or SIPP'd out).Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

By the time the end of my contract comes around I will be 2 years and 2 months with the council - I wonder if I am better withdrawing now and sticking the money in an ISA.0
