new radio only picks up one station

Options
Prev posted this on the homes board, am hoping someone here will have an answer!

I have been using a 15-year-old cassette/cd/radio player in our kitchen and it has good FM reception for all the national stations with just the built in stick aerial.
The trouble is it takes up a lot of space so we want to upgrade it to a smaller cd/radio/mp3 portable radio and have tried a couple of cheap £15-£20 ones. But whatever frequency we tune it to it only picks up our local radio station, which is supposed to broadcast on 106.3 only.
Does anyone understand why this might be happening? I had a similar experience with a small sony walkman radio - it would pick up other stations fine around the rest of the city but once I got close to our house it would automatically pick up the local station instead, whatever frequency I was on before.
Ideally we want a cd/radio player in one and we don't want to spend a lot which why we haven't upgraded to DAB. Can anyone tell us if there are any technical specs we should look for to ensure we can get the same reception as our 1990s stereo gets?!
Unfortunately the local radio station is dire!!!!

This is a total guess but do you live in Chester somewhere near Hoole? If so you are problably too close to Dee's transmitter and it's swamping the radio with too much signal, this would be especially true of cheap radios.
Same thing happened to me recently, I took a cheap and cheerful shower radio with me when I stayed in a Travelodge near Stowmarket. I wondered why all I could hear was Kiss fm (Vibe fm as was) whatever I tuned too. When I looked on Ofcom's site for the transmitter location it was only a mile or two away!

    Ah...

Now known as 'Your Station - Chester's Dee 106.3' broadcasting to Chester and surrounding areas of Flintshire and Ellesmere Port on 106.3FM from studios based in Chantry Court in Chester from a transmitter on The Steam Mill in the city centre.

The Steam Mill centre, where the transmitter is, is about 100 metres from our house... Is there anything we can do to counteract the evil Dee signal or do we have to splash out and go digital? I'll pay any amount of money not to have to listen to that drivel!!!!!!! :)

Sneak out in the dead of night and cut the wires. :D

Put your postcode in here and you decide whether to go dab. ;)
