What do I do to get a printer to use a compatible cartridge

I've been given an Epson SX105 all-in-one printer (but no manual)and I need to change the black cartridge. I've worked out what to do but it won't accept the new cartridge. I've done a Google search for instructions on how to get it to work but I can't find any. Please can any one tell me where to look? I'm not a whizz kid either so simple would be much appreciated:p

Throw it in the bin and buy a better quality one. Some really nasty cheap ones have a horrendously cut connector on the little circuit board on the cartridge that looks like squiggly lines rather than individual square pads.

Google for Epson SX105 reviews and there are lots of bad ones - don't waste money/time on it - give it back or to someone you don't like.

Had a similar issue with a compatible catrudge for an Epson S21 printer. I found this advice, and it's finally working:

if you are trying to use a compatible cartridge with originals you cant mix them they just wont work together.
