Nick Clegg will announce plans to spend £7bn over four years improving the education of England's poorest children through nursery, school and university.Two-year-olds from the poorest families will be offered 15 hours of free pre-school education a week, he will say.

OMG :eek: £7 bn. Obviously, everyone wants poor kids to be well educated but this seems mental.
Maybe it's not new money?
I'm so confused. The child benefit cuts only amounted to £1bn and this is £7bn!?

As the BBC reports;
Labour MP Graham Allen, who is chairing a commission into early intervention with the poorest children, described the extension of free pre-school to two-year-olds as a "superb investment"
Clearly the enthusiasm for peanut spreading extends beyond the Lib Dems0 -
Personally I reckon two-year olds won't benefit much from any kind of formal education. They'd be better off at home with their mums. Since the modern agenda (of all parties) is to get women to work as soon as they've delivered the child maybe this is just a back-door way of providing free child care?0

I thought the CB cuts amount to 1bn a year and this is 7bn spread over the whole parliament.
He probably got thrown a cookie by George after the tuition fees climbdown in order to placate libdem backbenchers and the remainder of the libdem vote.
Speech with 73 times 'fair' and 'fairness' in it to follow soon.0 -
i must be educationally 'challenged' how does 15 hours education for ALL the 2 year olds in the uk ever amount to 7bn--maybe they will develope some new quangos to waste money on!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0

cue the endless mind-numbing posts about Labour's spending to distract the very important fact that the Tories and Lib Dems will be exactly as bad if not more painful to the current generation...As the BBC reports;

There goes one.Not Again0 -
I doubt it's new money - how much is spend on SureStrart? I don't know alot about Sure Start, but isn't this very similar to what they were doing anyway - so maybe a focusing on the very poorest?0

Quite. 2 year olds need to play. I can't believe that the coalition are going to spend this money in this way?!:o
and 15 hours is only 3 hours a day - not enough time to seriously think about working. Enough time to go home, tidy up and back out to pick them (the kids) up again.0
