I think my friend said her childcare costs were NOT paid while she was on maternity leave, perhaps as it is not deemed necessary for you to work?

the childcare element is for childcare whilst youre at work. while youre home you dont need childcare.
if the child is 3 or 4 you will be entitled to 12 hours aweek as everyone is.

when i was working for my employer i had to go onto smp through the jobcentre and yes you can still getthe childcare element of tax credits as you are still classed as working for tax credits purpose !!!
but if after it ends you do not return to work then it would stop !!

You're on maternity, paternity or adoption leave
You can claim tax credits to help with childcare costs if immediately before you went on leave you were working 16 hours or more and any of the following apply:
    - you get maternity allowance
    - you're on ordinary maternity or adoption leave
    - you're in the first 13 weeks of additional maternity or adoption leave

just shows why the system is bleeding money lol
if you can still claim fotr childcare when youre not atcually working!
  • The cheek of some people baffles me.
  • you'll still get your ccc paid
this is for the period your receiving SMP or MA, provided you were working 16+ hrs per week before going on maternity leave

if your off longer than 39 weeks you need to phone helpline to advise of this and they'll stop wtc and ccc until you return to work
  • Thanks for the helpful comments and the more unhelpful ones too!!

You also need to think about whether you are returning to work or not after your maternity leave is up if your employer is paying more than the SMP. As you may need to pay this back.
