  • People drive around in vans looking for bags of clothes and steal them from the doorsteps.A high proportion of arrests seem to be eastern europeans.

I have never given to charities that post these bags through our door because its difficult to decide which are genuine, and which are scams, there are three charity shops in my area and we give our donations to them.

Even if you use a bag that you KNOW is for a proper charity - there is NO guarantee that it will be picked up off the street by the said charity. There are a lot of people who have nothing to do with ANY charity at all who simply drive round an collect them.

In true MSE style - I use all bags that get pushed through my door as bin liners ( fit perfectly on my kitchen swing bin  ) and take old clothes direct to the charity shops in the town centre.

As a side note - I visited Ukraine ( Kiev ) last April and there were several "UK Secondhand" shops. (Must post the photo's I took of the shops).

Now, I'm not saying that the proceeds (or proportion of) do not go to charity, but I certainly will not be taking the chance.

There are several of those "British second-hand shops" in both Hungary and Poland.

We have 3 Charity shops in our area. Not one of them go out to do collection runs, if an item is too big for delivery, I would phone them and arrange a collection date.

I dont know of ANY bag dropping charities that are genuine, the days of oxfam envelopes in your letterbox are long gone.

When I have clothes to go to a charity shop, I bag them up and take them to the shop. To me there is a big difference between donating to a charity, or to one begging for your donations.

Any bags or leaflets that are put through my door, are immediately thrown in the recycle bin. I should think ahead and fill them with bricks n mortar, just to see how long it takes or them to collect it. Or fill them with rags, literally.
