your XP license is useless for vista.
if your vista license is RETAIL you can use it as many times as you like on different PCs as long as you uninstall it from the old one each time and never have it installed on more than one machine.
if your vista license is OEM it is valid only for the first machine its installed on and can never be used on a different machine after first installed
same OEM vs RETAIL differentiation applies to your XP license, if its OEM you could put it back on the original PC at a later date but never on another machine, if its RETAIL you can use it elsewhere or even sell it on ebay when you're done with it they're (still going for a reasonable price too).
your licenses for XP and Vista are completly separate and what you do with one will not affect the other at all0 -
personally would stay with XP , unless you are upgrading to Win 7Ex forum ambassador

Another one who say no Vista its dead . XP may hang on for years Vista wont be around as its either stick with the older XP if everything works or upgrade to win 7 for most users .
