Much as I dislike GB, and have always been a Tory voter, the fact remains that we entered the recession with the second lowest debt to GDP ratio of any G7 nation.

The debt was not the problem, and neither caused nor worsened the recession.

Want to look at those figures once you have added in personal debt and unfunded PFI investments?

I told you they would cut budgets by 25% hamish, you didnt believe me, did you?

Which is utterly irrelevant to the topic at hand.

No I stated clearly that some departments, and areas within departments, would have huge cuts.

But that it wouldn't have much effect overall.

    And I was right.

Those "cuts" were paltry, nothing more than a long overdue rebalancing away from benefits claimants and public sector employees, and towards the private sector.

Total government spending is increasing every year this parliament.

The government will still be recruiting a net 180,000 people per year, and almost all the job cuts will be through natural attrition.

It's looking extremely unlikely we'll tip back into recession, with slow steady growth being the consensus outlook.

The UK is not only keeping it's AAA rating, but our debt is now cheaper than Germany's.

Most economists don't expect base rates to rise for years, and we probably won't see 5% rates for a decade.

And jokers like you have been proved decisively wrong with your constant doom-mongering predictions of Bearmageddon turning out to be a load of crap.

It woz the bulls wot won it.

Something we can agree on then.

By which time, I will have paid off my mortgage on a house I bought at 2004 prices. Bearmageddon for the couple that were repoed. It woz the bear that won that one ginger!

Coming late to the party :)

Age 27, approx £18.5k plus a few days overtime on and off. A bit unhappy right now as I've been badgering for a pay rise, and found my boss has spent over 3 times my wages on something that did not pan out very well.

Saying that, I am well paid for admin work (admin is generally £14K)

I wrote a big long essay about the situation but it boils down to my employer being SH1TE and not taking me or my concerns seriously.

Then start looking for another job that pays better.

I suppose I should disclose my figures, but I doubt it will prove interesting to anyone.

My annual income is more fluid in recent years, it's below 50K now but has been somewhat higher. Having said that I've tried to trade income for work-life balance [good hours, easy commute, control over the work I do and where etc].

This doesn't of course reflect that hidden factor, namely work we do for others in return for favours back. I haven't bothered with this thus far, but I have had a few enquiries recently. It seems a few garages get their computers and electrical work done for free. A couple of IT guys I know seem to get service work for just the cost of the parts. Funny that, eh? :) Are we going to see growth in the black economy?

You've already said you're overpaid? If you think you are worth more than apply for jobs elsewhere.
  • Aged 24 earning 29k but my job is very unstable and i could quite easily be out of a job within 1yr and/or in a lower paying role so saving as much as i can and applying for other jobs but it isnt easy to find something as i dont have alot of experience.

After looking through this thread I am amazed at the amount of high earning 'bears.'

To be quite frank, priced out my !!!!. That or you are lying about what you are earning or have a couple of Bentleys on finance.

Alternatively you don't see value in the housing market at the moment. There's no shame in admitting this, infact I feel the same way myself but just don't see a big crash looming.

There's nothing wrong with earning that kind of wage. I think people sometimes forget that the role is a major factor in the level of pay. You could be a truly incredible person; it still wouldn't get you £50k pa as an admin.

If you're willing to work hard and look for alternative work (perhaps involving a lot of applying and interviewing, especially at the moment) I'm sure you could earn more.

I know people who have the work ethic and intelligence to embarrass me who are earning considerably less because of lack of confidence / drive, or fear of change.
